About the event

When four-year-old Alex Gomez lost his father to a fatal accident and watched his mother disappear across a border to survive, no one could have predicted that the little boy scraping gum off telephone poles to have something to chew would one day become a celebrated symbol of the American dream. On Thursday, May 14, 2026, the Cherokee community is invited to hear his incredible story first-hand.

Today, Alex Gomez is a local legend. The City of Canton awarded Alex the “Keys to the City” in 2018.  His story is featured in Chapter 10 of the book Irrational Kindness, and he delivered the 2024 commencement address to Mountain Education High School. This summer, Alex will open his own Chick-fil-A  in Cartersville—a dream come true.

Alex wants people to know that even though life is hard, it is possible to overcome challenging circumstances.  His motto is: “Don’t give up. Show up.”
